Driving in and Around Houston, Texas

Navigating Houston's expansive freeway system can be confusing to any experienced driver, but here are a few tips for getting around town.

There are two main "loops" that serve as the hub of the Houston freeway system. The innermost loop is the 610, which forms a large square around downtown Houston. When business and restaurants in Houston say they're located "inside the loop," they're referring to the inside part of the 610. Three main interstates run through the 610 Loop: 10, 59 and 45, which all lead drivers downtown. Interstate 10 runs east to west through the northern portion of the 610 and leads to the University of Houston downtown campus and the theater district off Main Street.

Interstate 45 also leads towards downtown; the northern part of the highway takes drivers to local attractions like Greenspoint Mall and Lake Conroe. I-45 South leads to the Johnson Space Center, Hobby Airport, the University of Houston and Clear Lake. I-59 takes drivers from the western part of the 610 loop through the downtown area. From I-59, you'll find the Toyota Center and the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Beltway 8, officially known as Sam Houston Parkway, is Houston's outer loop. It's free to ride on the part of the highway that extends from I-10 East to I-45 North, but you'll have to pay a toll to travel the rest of it. The Outer Loop is a great way to get to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport/Houston.

When you're driving around downtown Houston, be on the lookout for one-way streets. Also, there are instances when street names can change unexpectedly, so consider checking out a map prior to driving through downtown Houston.
